Utah Case Studies in Civil Dialogue

Case Study 1: Bozniaks and Mormons

Prepare for a class discussion by responding to the questions below on your own paper.

  1. The 3Rs of Rights, Responsibility, and Respect mean that everyone has rights, everyone has the responsibility to protect the rights of others, and we honor the human dignity of others when we respectfully engage in civil dialogue. How does having knowledge about the religious beliefs and practices of a community different from your own make it more possible to uphold the 3Rs?
  2.  Civil dialogue is not debate. It is a process of seeking understanding of the conscience of others. What understanding did Jasna and Sheldon gain about the conscience of the other?

Learn more about how to promote the 3Rs — rights, responsibility, respect — in your school and community.
